Gastric bypass: you should know that!

Troubles après un bypass gastrique

Complaints after the gastric bypass: you should know that! Our specialists in Turkey will inform you about the most common complaints related to gastric bypass surgery. You will also learn what you can do to prevent, limit or relieve these symptoms.

Possible lack of nutrients

Because of the surgery, you can only eat small amounts. In these amounts, food cannot provide all the nutrients you need on a daily basis. It is therefore necessary to use a multivitamin/mineral supplement, because an inadequately composed diet cannot provide enough protein, fiber and linoleic acid either. These nutrient deficiencies can lead to reduced endurance, poor wound healing, hair loss, fatigue and muscle wasting. Our experts in Turkey will give you recommendations on which supplements to use after gastric bypass to prevent deficiencies.

Not losing weight fast enough?

Weight loss after surgery varies from person to person. This depends, among other things, on the following factors:

  • the amount of movement
  • of preoperative nutrition
  • the starting weight
  • of postoperative nutrition

What can you do? Eat and drink slowly. Take small bites and chew your food well. Allow at least half an hour for each meal and give yourself time to rest during the meal. Stop eating or drinking as soon as you feel full. Eating too much or too quickly can cause nausea. Also, overeating can stretch your stomach over time. Also, drink at least 1.5 liters a day. However, do not drink during a meal, but half an hour after it, so that the amount of food in the stomach does not become too large.

Move enough

If possible, exercise for half an hour every day. Weight loss is easier when combined with adequate exercise. Think of walking, cycling, gardening and swimming. You can also incorporate more physical activity into your daily routine, e.g. For example, use the stairs instead of the elevator, walk or bike to go shopping.

After the gastric bypass in Turkey: drinking enough is important!

Diet after gastric bypass surgery: you should pay attention to this!

Gastric bypass surgery is a special event in a patient’s life and requires adjustments to daily diet. First of all, we would like to emphasize that after gastric bypass surgery in Turkey, it is best to switch to a ketogenic diet in consultation with the dietician or specialist who is supervising you. Because specialists and dieticians recommend a menu that is tailored to the individual situation of the patient. It is therefore important that if you decide to change your diet, you discuss this with a nutritionist.

What should you eat after Gastric Bypass in Turkey?

Our Turkish specialists recommend dividing meals into 5 to 6 meals per day. It doesn’t really matter what you eat at what time, so feel free to vary. The table below shows the daily requirement for weight loss:

  • Total 1500ml of liquid (including dairy)
  • 50 grams of potatoes, rice or pasta
  • 100 grams of vegetables
  • 50 g lean meat, fish, chicken or vegetarian meat substitute
  • 3 slices of bread with a low-fat topping
  • 3 dairy products of 150 ml each, including a portion of low-fat cottage cheese.
  • 1-2 servings of fruit

Eat less fat

If you read the recommended menu above, you’ll probably notice that it contains lean meats and dairy. For example, it’s usually recommended to use 30% fat cheese rather than the full-fat variety. And now you might be wondering why fats should be specifically avoided. The reason for this is that fats cannot be processed as well after bypassing the stomach. The stomach has become smaller after surgery and there are fewer bile salts and enzymes to properly process the fats.

Eat a low-carb diet after gastric bypass surgery

If you want to eat fewer carbohydrates, you usually eat more fat and protein. This form of nutrition is considered a ketogenic diet and is intended to further support weight loss. However, a smaller stomach and fewer bile acids don’t necessarily mean that a low-carb diet isn’t for you. Three tips can help you stay on the ketogenic (low-carbohydrate) diet as a nutritional method, even after gastric bypass surgery.

1 – Due to the smaller capacity of your stomach, it’s best to split your meals into several eating units throughout the day. A daily menu could look like this:

  • Breakfast: eggs and bacon
  • In between: cheese cubes
  • Lunch: Chicken with roasted broccoli and olive oil
  • In between: Greek yoghurt
  • Dinner: Salmon with green salad and olive oil

2- Slowly introduce more fat into your diet:

There are two ways to start a ketogenic diet. The first is an abrupt onset, where you eliminate almost all carbohydrates from your diet overnight and replace them with fats. As you can probably imagine, this can cause problems for your digestive system, especially if you’ve had gastric bypass surgery. The second way is to gradually add more and more fat to your diet. In this way you give your body time to adjust to the changed composition of your diet. For example, your liver may produce more bile salts to help it process fats.

3- Help your body digest by eating foods that stimulate bile

As already mentioned, a smaller stomach is less able to digest fats with the help of enzymes (lipase) and bile acids. The following foods have been shown to stimulate bile production and fat digestion:

  • lemon or lime (juice)
  • celery
  • sauerkraut
  • Ginger
  • Apple Cider Vinegar

Special dietary supplements can also help you digest fat better after gastric bypass surgery. These include enzymes like pepsin, bromelain, and papain (for protein digestion). Fortunately, there are several dietary supplements on the market that combine the above enzymes and extracts in a single capsule. So you can easily support your stomach in digesting fats and proteins.
